Decay rates and nutrient release from decomposing aquatic weeds

Rapid increase of mineral nutrients, i.e. total organic matter, NH4-N, NO3-N and potassium in water with decomposing aquatic weeds of hydrilla (Hydrilla verticillata), salvinia (Salvinia molesta) and water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) were observed during the first three days of the experiment. However, release of calcium and magnesium was very slow. After 28 days, the nutrient content of the water except for the total organic matter and potassium was relatively high in pots with hydrilla compared to those with water hyacinth and salvinia. The rate of nutrient loss from the original stock solution for phosphorus, potassium and sodium was the same for all three species i.e. in order of K Na P. The rate of dry matter loss was in order of hydrilla water hyacinth salvinia.
