Status of existing coconut collections in South East Asia

Genetic erosion of coconut as the result of replanting of local cultivars with improved hybrids has been accelerated in recent decades in South East Asian countries. A global network of gene banks has therefore been established to provide plant breeders with the genetic resources. In Indonesia coconut germplasm collection are now being conserved at Mapanget, Bone-Bone, and Pakuwon. Characterization and evaluation of the accessions under standard environment are in progress. The programme in Malayan 38 accession of Talls and some accession of specific variants among Dwarfs and Talls have been assembled since 1982 to date. In the Philippines the PCA Zamboanga Research Centre has been able to collect 81 populations. Some of these are duplicated at PCA Davao Research Centre and PCA Albay Research Centre. In Thailand coconut germplasm collection is based at the Chumphon Horticultural Research Centre, where local and foreign germplasm of coconut are collected. Total accession consist of 9 Talls population and Dwarf types
