The effect of animal manure on yields of some food crops on the newly bench terraced critical land of latosol soil

A series of experiments to study the effect of animal manure on yields of some food crops on the critical land of latosol soil, which has just been bench terraced (the original slope was 30-60 deg) were conducted in the Citanduy watershed areas from 1981 to 1985. The food crops studied were upland rice, corn, and peanut (in the rainy season), and mungbean (in the dry season). All of the experiments were arranged as solid cropping, except in the 1982/83 experiment. The treatment consisted of 4-5 levels of animal manure application. These were: 0; 2.5; 5.0; 10.0 and 20.0 t/ha, respectively. Until the rate of 5.0 t/ha, the manure was applied in the furrow for plant row, while for the rate of more than 5.0 t/ha, the manure was broadcasted and mixed with the soil soon before planting. Each experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with 4 to 6 replications. Each plot size was 3.0 m x 5.0 m (except in the 1982/83) experiment which was 3.0 m x 3.5 m). The results showed that on the newly bench terraced land of the critical land with latosol soil which has just been bench terraced, even though the organic matter content was very low (according to the soil analysis data), the application of manure until 20.0 t/ha did not increase yields, if coincidently sufficient dosage of inorganic fertilizers (N, P, K) were also applied. The response of crops to the manure application of 5.0 t/ha as additional to N and P inorganic fertilizer, equals to the crop response to application of 100 kg KCl/ha as additional to the N and P inorganic fertilizers.
