Evaluation of seed production efficiency in enhancing the adoption of hybrid corn

These experiments were designed in order : 1) to find the genotypes that have high grain yield so that they are feasible to be used as female parents of hybrids among the promising inbred lines obtained during the previous evaluation of combining ability (good combiners), exotic superior inbred lines, open pollinated varieties and single cross hybrids; 2) to find inbred lines producing pollens abundantly that are feasible to be used as male parents of hybrids; and 3) to find inbred lines that are feasible to be used either as female parents or as male parents. The results indicated that not all promising inbred lines, open pollinated varieties, and single cross hybrids developed from promising inbred lines, are appropriate and feasible to be used as female parents. Variety MOSQB represent the most recommended genotype among the varieties and single cross hybrids tested, to be used as female parent and it is more efficient female parent than that of C1 hybrid. All of the varieties and single cross hybrids tested, except variety MOSQA, are appropriate and feasible to be used as female parent. Two out of eleven inbred lines tested are feasible to be used as female parent, i.e. : CTPI/242 and CTPI1/212. The quality of appearance and appeal of seed of hybrids using varieties and single crosses as female parents is higher than that of hybrids using inbred lines as female parents, because the former have larger seed than the latter.
