Weed control in lentils

Field experiments were carried out during the 1988/89 and 1989/90 growing seasons, at two locations each season, to detect the effects of weeds and their control on lentils (Lens culinaris Medic.). Weeds reduced lentils grain and straw yields by an average of 59 and 48%, respectively. Reductions were evident in the number of secondary branches as well as in the number of pods per plant. The critical period for weed interferance lied between 7 to 8 weeks and 7 to 11 weeks for grain and straw yields, respectively. Chemical weed control experiment indicated that prometryn 1.0 kg a.i./ha plus pronamide 0.5 kg a.i./ha, and prometryn of 1.0 kg a.i./ha plus sethoxydim at 0.5 kg a.i./ha were the most effective herbicidal treatments at all locations. In addition pronamide at 1.0 kg a.i./ha or fluazifop-butyl at 0.5 kg a.i./ha controlled grassy weeds and significantly increased grain and straw yieds, compared to other chemical treatments and the weedy check. The weedy free check was significantly better than all herbicidal treatments in increasing yields at all locations
