Isolation and characterization of acetolysis products from the yeast mannan

The yeast mannans isolated from baker's yeast by both Fehling's solution and Cetavlon methods were subjected to acetolysis followed by silica gel column chromatography giving a mixture of aldehyde mannose, mannose, and manno-oligosaccharides (DS 2-4). The structure of the mannose acetate derivatives was demonstrated by n.m.r. spectroscopy and methylation analysis. Finger prints of the acetolyzates obtained by quantitative t.l.c. analysis on silica gel indicated that the present method is suitable for the easy separation and quantitation of manno-oligosaccharides
