Records of dry matter yields and drying rates by sun-curing of seven tropical grasses for hay making in the Southern Kyusyu Region [Japan]

To search for appropriate grasses for hay making during summer season in the southern Kyusyu region, dry matter yields of colored guineagrass (Panicum coloratum cv. Solai and S 75), guineagrass (P. maximun cv. Natsukaze and Gatton), green panic (P. maximun var, trichoglume cv. Petrie), Rhodesgrass (Chloris gayana cv. Katambora) and Sudangrass (Sorghum sudanense cv. Hei sudan) were compared with each other after clipping in the vegetative stage (about eighteen day interval clipping) and in the earl heading stage. Drying rates by sun-curing of six grasses except for S 75 were determined using samples from the 2nd and 3rd clipping in the vegetative stage. Tatal dry matter yields from seven clippings in the vegetative stage were greater for Gotton, Natsukaze and Sudangrass followed by Rhodesgrass, Petrie and Solai, and S 75 was the lowest. By clipping in the early heading stage, the yields of Natsukaze and Sudangrass were greater than those of Gatton and Solain followed by Petrie, Rhodesgrass and S 75. There were differences among the six grasses in drying rates by sun-curing without mechanical conditioning. Sudangrass was dried the slowest compared with the other grasses. Solai and Natsukaze were dried slower than the other Panicum species. There was no relationship between drying rate and stem content or stem weight in the swath
