Seeding time and other factors related to variability of soybean [Glycine max] seed protein content

Variability of seed protein content in different years and with different seeding times, was investigated using 9 varieties 3 maturity groups. Seed protein content varied with year and seeding time. Seed protein content in 1983 was significantly greater than that in 1982. Seed protein content of plants sown in late May was greatest and that of plant sown in late August was smallest. The variability of seed protein content was explained well by 3 factors, using multiple regression analysis. They were the number of days, mean temperature and sunshine hours during the period from the 10th day after blooming to the 5th before maturing. Effects caused by these 3 factors in variability of seed protein content varied not only with maturity group of the variety but also with variety itself. Especially, there was positive correlation between seed protein content of early varieties and sunshine hours. On the contrary, there was a negative correlation between seed protein content of late varieties and both sunshine hours and mean temperatures
