Studies on seed longevity of crops in long-term storage

Germination rates of several seed stocks of soybean, naked barley and wheat stored in the medium-term storage room (-1 degrees C and 30% RH) of the MAFF Gene Bank of the NIAR for 16 to 20 years were higher than 90%. The results suggest that it may be possible to monitor the seed viability less frequently than once every 5 years. The naked barley seeds stored in both small aluminum cans and paper envelopes for 12 or 13 years showed very high germination rates. A great difference in seed longevity was observed among different crops using an accelerated aging treatment. Paddy rice and upland rice seeds, both of which were newly harvested and stored in the long-term storage room (-10 degrees C and 30% RH), showed different tendencies in seed longevity by an accelerated aging treatment.
