Population estimate and behavior of Palawan tree shrew, Tupaia palawanensis (Scandentia, Tupaiidae)

The population density of the Palawan tree shrew, Tupaia palawanensis (Thomas) at the Balsahan area, Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm, Puerto Princesa City (Palawan, Philippines) was determined using two techniques - the multiple recapture methods and line transect sample count. The basic behavior of this endemic species in its natural habitat was also studied including its feeding habits under captive conditions. The line transect method is an appropriate technique for estimating the population density of T. palawanensis (1.6-3.2 individuals per hectare). Dispersion patterns show a regular type during early morning and late afternoon periods that coincide with foraging activity. The aggregate distribution type is exhibited during high noon when adverse weather conditions are present. Tupaia palawanensis is primarily a solitary and ground-dwelling species with peak activities occurring twice a day. In captivity, the Palawan tree shrew subsists on an omnivorous diet with a strong preference for insects with hard exoskeletons (e.g. Coleopterans) and fleshy fruits as supplemental food items.
