Management of potato tuber moth Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) in potato seed storage in Thailand

Potatoes in seed storage were damaged by PTM [potato tuber moth] Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) but the damage was low (6-14%) this year in areas where potato is stored continuously. However, in the warehouse where the potato tubers were stored all year, the PTM damage was high. Natural enemies were not found on insecticidal treated storages. PTM larvae would require less than 1 gram of potato to complete its development. Optimum development was observed at 25 deg C. However, in the controlled room (23 +- 2 dec C) or uncontrolled room (25-29 deg C), PTM population showed high rate of development. Delfin was found to be the best Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner (Bt) commercial product while the granulosis virus at 25 diseased larvae per liter of water was found to be effective in controlling PTM population. Trichogramma nubilale Ertle and Davis was found to be more effective in parasitizing PTM egg than Trichogrammatoidea bactrae Nagaraja and Trichogramma confusum Viggiani. There were no significant difference of the parasitization of PTM and Corcyra cephalonica eggs from these 3 Trichogramma species. All integrated treatments showed promising protection against tuber rot and damage by PTM within 3 months compared to untreated (dipped in water and control).
