Heavy metal contents of the edible molluscs (gastropods and bivalves) of Paracale, Camarines Norte [Philippines]

The gastropods Terebralia sulcatus and Telescopium telescopium and the bivalve Crassostrea rhizophora were collected from the mangrove area (Station II) 1,500 m SW of the mining in Paracale, Camarines Norte [Philippines]. One (1) g wet weight sample digests wre analyzed for heavy metal contents (i.e. Ag, Au. Cd, Cu, Pb, HG, and Zn). Physico-chemical characters like pH, salinity, and temperature were monitored to establish present conditions of the Paracale environment. Different fractions (exchangeable, - CO3, oxides of Fe and Mn, and organic) of the sediment for Cu, Pb, Zn, Fe, and Mn were determined. Results showed that the present condition of the Paracale mangrove or estuarine waters with an average salinity of 20% and pH 7.57 favored high bioaccumulation of Zn in the soft tissues of C. rhizophora (772.00 mg/kg) but minimal accumulation of the other metals. T. sulcatus on the other hand, had highest bioaccumulation of Cu (16.59 mg/kg), with comparable concentration in the hepatopancreas of T. telescopium (14.20 mg/kg).
