Efficacy of bayluscide 250 EC at various rates and water depths against golden snail (Pomaceae sp.) in transplanted and direct seeded rice

Two separate field trials were conducted at Tropics Biological Research Center in Laguna [Philippines] during the 1992 wet season to evaluate the bioefficacy of Bayluscide 250 EC against the golden snails (Pomacea sp.) in testing lowland direct seeded (DSWS) and transplanted (TPR) rice. Bayluscide at 1.0 and 1.5 liters product/ha was compared with Metaldehyde 50 WP at 1.0 and 1.5 kg/ha at various water depth at 2, 4, and 6 cms at the time of application. Results revealed that plots treated with Bayluscide at 1.0 and 1.5 l/ha with water levels of 4 and 6 cm consistently had the highest snail mortalities and low crop damage on both DSWS and TPR rice. No significant differences in snail mortalities and crop damage were observed at 1.0 and 1.5 l/ha of Bayluscide. Bayluscide treatments were effective and killed snails faster than 1.0 and 1.5 kg/ha of Metaldehyde applied at the same water levels. Rate of 1.5 kg/ha or more Metaldehyde is needed to provide efficacy to that of 1.0 l/ha of Bayluscide for effective control of golden snails in rice fields
