Evaluation of protein-enriched products from agricultural materials as animal feeds

A stationary solid state bioreactor was designed for protein production by selected fungal strains using cassava, banana, sweet potato and cassava pulp. It was cubic-shaped and equipped with regulatory systems to maintain moisture content and temperature during fermentation. Batch fermentation significantly increased the crude protein content by as much as eight folds. Upon fermentation, protein-enriched products were obtained containing 17% protein for cassava and sweet potato, 25% for banana and 20% for cassava pulp. The amino acid profile of fermented products showed increases in both the essential and non-essential amino acids. The process conditions significantly decreased the free and total cyanide concentration in cassava products. Toxicity assays of fermented materials revealed no toxic metabolites. Digestibility study on chicken showed that the products contained low fiber making them suitable as poultry feed. The feeding trials revealed that the protein-enriched products can be utilized as feed for broilers, swine and tilapia
