Updating swine production and management practices for Filipino producers

Published reports on the reproductive performance of sows under commercial swine farming condition in the Philippines from 1990 to the present were reviewed. Litter size at birth and at weaning and farrowing rate of sows remain major problems of the Filipino pork producers. Considerable improvements have been achieved in farrowing index and survival rate of pigs from birth to weaning resulting in more pigs produced per sow per year in the 80s compared with the 70s. Floor space of growing pigs on fully or partially slotted pens and on concrete floors were evaluated. Pigs on concrete floor performed better if given 1.0 sq.m. up to selling time than those provided with smaller floor area. However, smaller floor space can be given to growing pigs on partially slotted pig pens. Weanling pigs on flat deck may be given 0.25 sq.m. floor space for 30 days and bigger spaces should be provided to the pigs if they will be kept for a longer period. Farm efficiency and feed cost to produce a kilogram live animal sold should be used together in evaluating profitability of the farm. The most efficient farm does not necessarily mean the most profitable one. A relatively new way of farm evaluation was introduced
