Morphological and physiological response of four upland crops to geothermal effluent residues and fertilizer in a contaminated lowland soil

The morphological response of corn, wheat, mungbean and soybean to effluent residues in a lowland soil previously planted to lowland rice was evaluated. Likewise, the morpho-physiological response of corn to various fertilizer treatments on the same contaminated soil was determined. Indicators of sensitivity to the residues were noted as early as the germination stage. Seedling emergence was delayed. Drying of leaf tips was noted in all four species but most severely affected were mungbean and soybean. Among the four crop species, corn showed the lowest stability index for all morphological parameters studied. This indicates that this species has the greatest potential to survive but there were no indications of a satisfactory grain yield. Mungbean was the least resistant among the four crop species. Fertilizer application significantly increased total dry matter yield of corn but the same effect was not noted on leaf photosynthesis and stomatal conductance 26 days after emergence
