Within herd animal model evaluation of bulls and cows

Within herd system for genetic evaluation of dairy bulls and cows was developed. The linear animal model included fixed effects of herd - year - season of calving and genetic groups for unknown parents, and random effects of animal and environment. Estimated breeding values for all bulls and cows in the analysed data set for milk yield, fat yield and fat content were computed. Animal model evaluations with the selection indices were compared. The significant differences between animal model and selection index predictions were stated. The possibility of creating the system of within herd genetic evaluation linked to a national evaluation system was discussed
