Microbial decomposition of fluoranthene in soil

The studies aimed to determine the decomposition rate of fluoranthene in soil, its effect of microflora as well as the possibility to form compounds with potential mutagenic and carcinogenic character. Fluoranthene introduced into soil caused the reduction of autochtonic actinomycetes. It stimulated the growth of the microorganisms used to inoculate the soil which were adapted to utilize the compound. Fluoranthene was absorbed and decomposed in the soil. There was not a correlation between the residue of fluoranthene in the soil and the hydroxyphenolic acids content. It was found that the compounds contained in the extracts of the soil had no mutagenic and carcinogenic properties
