This paper reviews the physiological basis of barley's adaptation to harsh environments and its growth, development and yield performance in relation to genotypic differences and climatic and other environmental parameters. Of the temperate cereals, barley is the best adapted to harsh environments characterized by short growing seasons terminated by high temperature and drought. The physiological basis of the adaptation of the crop to such conditions is considered, along with other aspects of development, carbon economy and water relations. Traits associated with high and stable yield in water-limited environments are considered, the principal ones being rapid early growth and the attainment of full ground cover, early flowering and rapid grain growth
