This book gives information on the most important Surinamese timber species of actual or potential value. The extensive forests covering over 80 percent of Suriname's land area contain many useful timber species of which some have an established reputation. Individual timber species are described in alphabetical order according to their common Surinamese name. Properties and uses are presented in tabular form, for easy reference and comparison, the most important properties of the various timber types, with regard to density, strength, durability, working and seasoning. All shrinkage and strength figures are listed in the section tables, which are preceeded by a brief description of timber testing methods. The selection of timber species was based on present and potential commercial value, and on relative frequency. The object of the selection was to restrict the number of species, mentioning only timbers that might interest customers. Some new species have been included. An index of scientific, local and trade names, a list of genera, and a selected list of references conclude this book
