Production of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal spores of Gigaspora calospora and their effect on the growth of onion (Allium ascalonicum l.), garlic (Allium sativum l.) and corn (Zea mays var.rugosa l.)

Studies were made on the production of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal spores, Gigaspora calospora species in onion (Allium ascalonicum L.), garlic (Allium sativum L.) and corn (Zea mays var. rugosa L.) and their effects on the growth of these plants grown in plastic bage for 70 days were also examined. The plants were divided into two groups. The control group with no G. calospora spores inoculation and the treatment group which was inoculated with G. calospora spores. The number of spores in the soil around the roots of garlic was highest whereas those in the soil growing corn and onion were respectively less. Root infection was observed only in the inoculated group. Garlic roots showed the highest percentage of infectivity and onion roots, the lowest. The treatment inoculated with G. calospora spores gave higher wet and dry weights of the bulbs of onion, the bulblets of garlic and the aerial parts of onion and garlic including the aerial parts of corn than those of the control group.
