Pathogenesis of Mycobacterium in freshwater fish : Betta splendens Regan

Siamese fighting fish fry, Betta splendens Regan, reared from healty broodstock were fed on untreated and treated Moina sp (KMnO4 1,000 ppm for 10 sec., Chlorine 5 ppm, for 10 sec., Acriflavin 500 ppm for 10 sec.) for twelve months to determine the occurrence of tuberculosis. Some miliary focal granulomata were present in the intestinal musculasis layer and the mesentery of the experimental fish from all treatments by the fourth month. The kidney and spleen were the organs most seriously and consistently affected. No granuloma was observed in the brain, gonads and heart of the experimental fish. Granuloma intensity increased with the rearing time. Mycobacterium colonies from infected organs were grown successfully on ogawa egg media but not on brain heart infusion media (BHI).
