Hydrobiological and fishery resource surveys in Pranburi reservoir Prachuabkhirikhan Province [Thailand]

Secchi disc transparency ranged between 80-150 cm, water temperature 26-32 deg Celsius.; pH 6.0-6.8 D.O. 6.8-9.8 mg/1.; CO2 2-4 mg/l; alkalinity 60-90 mg/l; and hardness 60-100 mg/l. These conditions are within a suitable range for the living of most aquatic organisms. Phytoplankton were consisted of 83 species in 4 phyla and zooplankton 20 species in 9 phyla with total abundance of 11.9X10 (exp.6) cells/cubic meter, 3 phyla of benthic organisms with a density of 1,348 indi/cubic meter were indentified during the survey period. Fish standing crop estimated by spot poisoning was observed at 28.90 kg./rai (180.63 kg/ha). The ratio between forage to carnivorous species (F/C) was 3.05 and the catch per unit of effort estimated by electrofishing was 1.5/kg/hr. A total of 14 families including 23 species of freshwater fish were found in this impoundment. Fish diversity index ranged from 1.84-2.68. An electrofishing device was used to collect fish for stomach content analysis, there were 5 species condidered as piscivor, namely N notopterus, X. cancila, C.lucius, C. striatus and P. fasciatus. C. armatus was described as an insectivore and plankton feeder T. trichopterus is classified as plankton and detritus feeder. T. trichopterus is classified as plankton and detritus feeder. Seven species of fish samples were examined for both external and internal parasites. The nematode, Pseudoproleptus sp. was found in the stomach of Notopterus notopterus, which was the first recorded in Thailand. There was no digenetic trematode was observed from this study. The annual total fish caught by fishermen was estimated around 120.86 tons and only 68 fishermen were observed to operate fishing activity daily. The average income from fishing was 66.36+-21.91 Bahts per fisherman per day. Maximum sustainable yield is estimated at 11.31 ton per month.
