Effects of calcium, magnesium and sulphur on seed yield and seed quality of some large-seeded groundnut cultivars

Effects of calcium, magnesium, and sulphur on seed yield and seed quality in large-seeded groundnut cultivars RCM 387, KUP24D-421, and KUP24D-615 were reported last year. The application of calcium, magnesium, and sulphur in Pakchong soil series did not affect groundnut pod and seed yield, seed weight, and shelling percentage in the dry season and rainy season. Application of calcium, magnesium, and sulphur in the dry season planting did not affect either groundnut seed germination percentage or seed vigor of the four groundnut cultivars. However, in the rainy season, seed germination and seed vigor as determined by the accelerated aging technique at 42 deg. Celsius - 100 % R.H. for 96 hours and field emergence counted at 14 and 21 days after planting were found to increase with the application of calcium, magnesium, and sulphur, eventhough there was no difference in calcium, potassium, and phosphorus contents in the mature groundnut seeds (kernels). Results from the rainy season experiment also showed that accumulations of calcium and phosphorus in the mature groundnut seeds were potentially high, while potassium was potentially low with the application of calcium, magnesium, and sulphur. Seed quality of the four large-seeded groundnut cultivars was significantly correlated with the amount of calcium, potassium, and phosphorus in mature kernels. Seeds with high calcium and high phosphorus content were high in germination percentage and seed vigor while seeds with high potassium content were low in seed germinability and seed vigor.
