Look at the maize's cropping systems in Thailand

Maize's production in Thailand is low in efficiency. The national average of the maize's yield has been stagnant for the last 10 years despite the fact that Thailand has high-yielding maize's cultivars with wide adaptability to diverse regions in both tropical and subtropical areas. This review is an attempt to investigate some aspects of the relationship between the present cropping systems of maize and the rain-fall patterns on the production of maize in Thailand. In areas with certain rain-fall pattern, the present double-cropping systems of either maize-maize or maize-other field crops could incur yield's loss or crop's failure on the maize's crop that was grown as the first crop in the early part of the rainy season; this was owing to encountering water deficiency during two crucial stages of the plant's growth, i.e., flowering and grain-filling stages. In this review, suggestions for adjustment of the existing cropping system of maize were also described. The suggested adjustments include : 1) Change in the mode of land preparation as well as replacing the present medium-mature cultivars of maize with earlier-mature ones. 2) Replacing the maize's crop in the early rainy season (April - July) with other field crops which had earlier maturity; and maintaining only maize in the late-rainy season (July - October). 3) Complete change from the present practice of double-cropping systems to monoculture system of maize with later maturity and high-yielding capacity. 4) Introducting thornless mimosa (a green-manure legume) as living mulch in the maize's crop when maize is grown as a monoculture crop.
