Extent of post harvest losses and quality deterioration of hot peppers exported from Trinidad and Tobago to Canada

A survey of the post harvest handling system for fresh market hot peppers exported from Trinidad and Tobago to Europe and North America, including 23 exporters operating in both dry and wet seasons respectively was conducted over 1988-1989. Exporters procured peppers from private farmers or producers and from wholesale markets. Quality requirements were dictated by importer or broker and varied according to destination. Seventy five percent of exporters stored and prepared fruits for export under ambient conditions and quality deteriorated faster at the airport cargo handling area than in the exporters' packing house. Post harvest losses evaluated up to airport cargo handling area were 31.9-39.0 '% in the dry season and increased a further 13.9-20.5 % in the wet season. Pathological damages and losses were highest and physiological damages lowest.
