Reviews the development of the milk industry in Guyana from 1972 to 1988. Highlights problems faced by small producers in moving into the interior near the large state farms despite the many services these offered. By the end of 1979 these problems resulted in neglect of small farmers, failures of the large-scale sector and dire decline in domestic milk production. With the help of several international agencies an intermediate-scale model was developed. The changes and successes of this system and the adopted technologies are described.
