The present situation in the citrus industry in Trinidad and Tobago - A conflict of interests

In the citrus industry, there is a conflict of interests between the rehabilitation programme of the Trinidad and Tobago government and the objectives of certain entrepreneurs. The conflict lies in the function of marketing. The marketing methodology of citrus is characteristic of local plantation agriculture. If abandoned citrus orchards are rehabilited, Trinidad will be self sufficient in citrus products with some for exports. The details of the citrus rehabilitation programme is reported. Poor trading policies is the main reason for failure of the citrus corporation. Agricultural marketing on the domestic market was not fully recognized as an essential element of citrus production and, since it failed to develop, an almost monopolistic situation existed for an aggressive entrepreneur. In contrast, a government guaranteed price system against the aggression of this superior entrepreneur whose activities would completely suppress any attempt at rehabilitation of the citrus farms, a ban on imported synthetic citrus products, a phase reduction in the importation of all citrus concentrates, the sole authorized importer of all citrus juice should be the Cooperative Citrus Growers Association (CCGA), and a revised guaranteed price system are recommended by the citrus rehabilitation committee.
