The effects of pretreatments on browning of explants from Artocarpus altilis (Breadnut) seedlings

The establishment of cultures of Artocarpus altilis is made difficult because of the presence of phenolic compounds in the tissue. Attempts have been made to alleviate the harmful effects of oxidised phenolic compounds by various pre-treatments. Shoot tip and nodal cuttings of breadnut seedlings were soaked in sterile solutions of various antioxidants for one hour prior to culturing. Control explants were not treated before being cultured. Explants were cultured on half-strength Murashige and Skoog (1962) medium, supplemented with 6-benzylaminopurine. Cultures were observed weekly for three weeks. The viability of pretreated explants was higher than untreated ones.
