Effect of cultivars and fertilizer rates on groundnut yield

Field experiment was conducted during the rainy season of 1988 at the Field Research Site of the Faculty of Agriculture Nakhon Sri Thamma-rat, Amphoe Thung Yai, Nakhon Sri Thammarat, to investigate the yield of five groundnut cultivars with full and half of the recommended fertilizer rate. The characteristics of soil at the experimental site are as follows: pH 6.6, organic matter 0.84 %, availble P 8 ppm, exchangeable K 36 ppm, and Ca 318 ppm. A split-plot in randomized complete block design with 3 replicates was used. Five groundnut cultivars (Khon Kaen 60-1, Khon Kaen 60-2, Khon Kaen 60-3, Tainan 9, and Lampang) were arranged as main plots and two fertilizer rates (50 and 100 kg/rai of 3-9-6) were sub plots. All groundnut cultivars were planted at a spacing of 50x20 cm. except Khon Kaen 60-3 which was planted at 50x10 cm. spacing. Pod yield of Khon Kaen 60-1 cultivar was highest and differed significantly from those of other cultivars. All cultivars also exhibited differences in seed size (100 seed weight) and shelling percentage. Khon Kaen 60-3 cultivar apparently had a problem of unfilled pods. High rate of fertilizer gave significantly higher 100-seed weight, but the two fertilizer rates gave no difference in shelling percentage and pod yield. It appeared that half of the recommended fertilizer rate would be adequate for groundnut production in the conditions similar to those of this experiment.
