Mammalian milk is an unique substance. It provides complete nutrition and delivers to the newborn a variety of substances to help it to adapt to extrauterine life. Milk is highly species-specific. Human milk supplies complete nutrition to the infant and transmits a number of nonnutritive substances with noninfective properties. Hence, whenever premature and low birth weight infants are concerned, the best way to meet their nutritional requirements is to use specifically adapted baby formulas.
