The evaluation of plasma and serum viscosities in normal dairy and communal cattle, and observations of changes during the infections

A reference range of plasma and serum viscosity values was established for Zimbabwean dairy cattle and communal heifers. These values showed differences between adults and heifers. A comparison between the fibrinogen calculated by viscometry and the fibrinogen concentration estimated by the Heat Precipitation method was computed with no significant correlation being found. Clinical cases of mastisis and eperythrozoonosis were monitored by routine haematology and by viscometry. Results suggested that leucocyte values in infectious processes do not always become elevated and as such do not provide adequate information on the animal's health status. The response however of the acute phase reactants, mainly fibrinogen, was seen as an elevated plasma viscometry value. Indications were that plasma and serum viscosity values in bovines provided additional information and may aid in the diagnosis of diseases. Plasma viscometry values appeared to mirror the animals response to treatment and may serve as a prognostic value. This study has provided a foundation for further studies into bovine diseases utilising viscometry
