The objective of the study was to determine the initial and residual agronomic effectiveness of phosphate rock (PR) from Minjingu using soils from four areas in Morogoro district, namely, Magadu, Mzumbe, Mafiga 1 and Mafiga 2. All soils with available P content less than 6.5mg P/kg (Madadu, Mzumbe and Mafiga 1) responded to the application of triple superphosphate, indicating that they were P deficient. Response to Minjingu PR was obtained only in Magadu and Mzumbe soils. The response to Minjingu PR was more pronounced in Magadu soil than Mzumbe soil and this was partly attributed to improved Ca nutrition by the PR. Soils which were not sufficiently acidic and P deficient (Mafiga 1 and Mafiga 2) did not respond to Minjingu PR application. In the responsive soils, Minjingu PR had higher residual effectiveness than triple superphosphate
