The effects of oxytetracycline in poultry feed on growth and antibiotic resistance of Escherichia coli in harvest cockerels
1988
Chigagure, N. (University of Zimbabwe, Harare (Zimbabwe). Dept. of Biological Sciences)
The objectives of this investigation are: to study the effects of oxytetracycline as a growth promoter in harvest cockerels (a commercial hybrid developed for egg production); to assess the effects of oxytetracycline on the antibiotic resistance of gut Escherichia coli and to assess the effects of the acquired resistance on several clinically important antibiotics. The paper states that feeding harvest cockerels diets containing oxytetracycline only promotes the development of antibiotic resistance and no significant increase in growth rate. This justifies the concern that the usefulness of antibiotic in treating diseases in both animals and man will decline
