The article discusses the outbreaks of armyworm throughout Central and Southern Africa, for many farmers, large and small scale, they were a heavy blow following a prolonged drought. The broad development of last season's outbreaks was successfully predicted by estimating the time and place of moth emergence from previous outbreaks, and collating these with weather maps showing wind fields and rainfall
