Opportunities and constraints in the communal poultry sector

This article focuses on the communal poultry sector with its problems and opportunities for its development and offers the solutions or strategies to combat these problems. The communal poultry producer has limited capital resources and limited market outlets. Production is also limited by the lack of managerial capabilities in the rural farmers, which results in ineffecient production and this adversely affect the profitability of their poultry units. Many of the risks and difficulties facing communal poultry producers are due to lack of institutional support which give rise to irregular poultry product quality and standards, absence of sources of credit for poultry producers and the lack of assistance to get inputs to the farmers. Lack of proper marketing opportunities is the major obstacle in the promotion of poultry production in rural areas. One of the factors which limits the range of market outlets is the absence of functional transport system to distribute products from rural to urban markets
