Root materials of 16 species of Gramineae and 18 species of Leguminosae growing on laterite soil in the Jahangirnagar University campus near Dhaka, Bangladesh were examined for Vesicular-Arbuscular (VA) mycorrhizae. All the examined plant species showed the colonization of VA Mycorrhiza (VAM), but the extent of infection varied from species to species ranging from 4 to 46.66% and 6.77 to 62.50% in the graminaceous and leguminous species respectively. The extent of infection ranging from 21 to 30% was most frequent in both the families. Heterotrophic bacteria and fungi in the rhizosphere soils were found to have negative influence on the colonization of VAM in the plant roots
