Study on mineral complementation in the composting process in farmers conditions of Mugamba - Burundi

In this study which is a continuation of the research done on farmers fields on potatoes in the natural region of Mugamba, three methods of composting have been tested: the composting without fertilizer addition, the one with addition of 5 kg of DAP (diammoniumphosphate; old method) and the one where 5 kg DAP, 3.5 kg TSP (triple superphosphate) and 2 kg urea have been added (new method). The three methods give three statistically different response curves on potatoes when the multiple linear regression methodology has been used. All the economic parameters (profit, value/cost ratio) and risk factor have been improved with the new method. The advantage of the new method is that with a small dose of compost (which means a saving in labour) of 10 tons per hectare the ratio value/cost and the profit were comparable to those obtained with the old method using 30 tons per hectare. Soil analyses after harvesting have shown that the new method has improved the P Bray-1 content and pH and limited the exchangeable aluminium in the soil.
