The authors highlight the environmental factors which impede the establishment of artificial pastures in Kikuyu (Pennisetum clandestinum Hochst. ex Chiov.) in the central zone of Zaire-Nil ridge. These include desaturated soils with a high acid and aluminium content, step slopes, the aggressivity of local grasses and ferns (Pteridium aquilinum (L.) Khun) and a dry season lasting up to three months.
