Remediation of oil contaminated soils in a dry solid reactor

Experiments in biological soil remediation suffer some drawbacks; lack of good large scale screening tests and lack of bench scale infrastructure. In this contribution a screening procedure in Bench Scale Test Reactor fluid reactors is described, to evaluate efficiency of oil degraders. A 50 kg (dry weight) reactor has been used to test the organisms under well-known process conditions, thus providing optimal process parameters. Mixing rate, aeration, temperature, nutrient addition and water content are on line monitored leading to optimal degradation rates. The reactor is equipped with mixers to prevent clogging of the soil, making it useful to work under dry as well as under fluid conditions. As the reactor is completely air tight, it is possible to make an estimation of the evaporation of the oil components. Two experiments will show (1) the usefulness of this reactor in research and (2) the influence of water content of the soil on breakdown kinetics.
