Biodegradability of abiotically transformed catechol and 1-naphtol

Phenolic toxic compounds, such as catechol and 1-naphtol, generate considerable damage in natural ecosystems. It has become an obvious problem over the past decades. Bioremediation studies have therefore been undertaken, with positive results. However catechol and 1-naphtol were recently shown to be chemically unsteady in mixture. These transformations are greatly affected by the pH conditions, quite slow in acidic conditions and very rapid at pH greater than 8.0. The abiotic transformation of these toxics interferes with the evaluation of the capacity or degradation rates of microorganisms. In the present study, the aerobic biodegradability of abiotically transformed catechol and 1-naphtol was investigated, in comparison with those of the untransformed compounds in order to choose the best treatment for the degradation of effluents which contain these compounds (with or without a chemical step before the biological treatment).
