Keersmaecker, S. de | Keersmaeker, F. de | Branden, J. van den | Vlierberghe, L. van
A description is given of two cases of fatal haemorrhage in mares in the postpartum period. Both mares underwent Caslick surgery (vulvoplasty), and were restricted by means of a twitch and by administration of an alpha 2 adrenoreceptor-agonist in combination with an opium derivate. The clinical history and autopsy are given. It is discussed how a combination of physical and chemical factors can cause a hypertension resulting in fatal haemorrhage. Suggestions are made for the management of mares in the peripartum period.
