Discrepancy between Belgian law and anatomical finding concerning nuchal lymphnodes in horses

Under Belgian law, all grey and white horses that are slaughtered should be examined for melanosis. The respective European directive claims that this examination should be performed on the subrhomboidal lymphnodes. However, these lymphnodes are only present in cattle and are not described in horses, nor were they found in the course of our study performed on ten slaughtered horses. In three out of those carcasses nuchal lymphnodes were observed lying deep caudomedially in the nuchal regions. Superficial cervical lymphnodes were well developed in all horses. For the detection of equine melanosis, which is usually of epidermal origin, superficial lymphnodes, such as the superficial cervical and subiliac lymphnodes, should be examined.
