[Response of four genotypes of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) as a second crop, to three sowing dates]

The objective of this thesis was to evaluate the effects of three sowing dates, spread through a period of 20 days, December 20, 1992 to January 10, 1993, on four early soybean genotypes belonging to maturity groups I and II. Variables measured were foliar area, adult plant height, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, seed weight, seed yield, and oil and protein content and yield. Two simultaneous experiments were conducted, the first one to measure foliar area, and the second the remaining variables. The experiment design was a split plot with four replications, arranged as randomized complete blocks. Hill plots were used. Each variable was submitted to an analyses of variance; the differences between treatments were estimated through Duncan's New Multiple Range Test at the 0.05 level. Correlations were calculated between pairs of variables. Oil and protein content were determined from a seed composite of the four replications, and therefore, no statistical analyses were conducted on these variables. Sowing dates had significant effect on all variables measured. Genotypes had the same effect, excepting date and genotype were not significant. The second sowing date induced a 20% yield increase over the first planting date; a 40% yield decrease was observed in the third planting date as compared with the second. Correlations were positive and significant. Oil content tended to decrease and protein content to increase in the second and third sowing dates, as compared with the first one.
