Studies on the environmental influence of acid rain against soil-plant system: The effects of acid rain spraying on the physiology and development of rice and wheat

Imitative acid rain, similar to natural rainfall in the research area in ion population and with various acidity, was sprayed separately during vegetative and reproductive stage of rice and wheat. After the spraying of acid rain, especially with high acidity, the external osmotic ration of electrolyte, chrlorophyll content, activity of polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase, leaf stomata conductivity, and net photosynthetic ratio of both rice and wheat leaves were restrained. Acid rain resulted in more physiological affect during vegetative stage than during the reproductive stage. Microscopic examination showed that high acidity (pH 2.5) of acid rain gave direct harm to the structure of leaves. The yield of wheat seemed to be promoted effect from acid rain, but rice showed negative effect. The effects of seed protein content of both rice and wheat were not obvious
