Effect of the alfalfa stand establishment method on seed yields
1995
Kubinec, S. (Vyskumny Ustav Rastlinnej Vyroby, Piestany (Slovak Republic))
The effect of five spring sowing methods (without cover crop; into broad bean, green fodder maize, oat and field pea mixture, green fodder spring barley), and three summer methods (after conventional soil preparation before sowing, after disc tillage, no-tillage sowing) at two spacings (75 and 125 mm) on stand establishment, stand completeness and yields at the same sowing rate of 7.5 mil. seedlings per 1 ha for variants was investigated. Within a three-year average, the highest number of seedlings was found with sowing without cover crops. The year and cultivation had great effect on alfalfa seed yield in the second and third years of growing. Row spacing had not statiscically significant effect on the yield level. No correlation was found between seed germination capacity and stand formation method. Average values of thousand-seed weight varied from 1.95 to 2.09 in the second year and from 1.91 to 2.03 g in the third year. No significance was found out in statistical evaluation of thousand-seed weight differences.
