Effect of feeding tallow and rapeseed oil to cows on their milk, milk fat and protein production in early stage of lactation

The experiment was carried out with 45 newly calved cows of the 2nd and later lactation which were divided and matched into 3 equal groups. Besides the basal ration the cows were fed with either 0,5 kg tallow or 0,5 kg rapeseed oil per head daily. The experiment was carried out within 90 days. The average milk production of the cows fed with tallow was 2,59 kg and of the cows fed with rapeseed oil was 2,67 kg higher, as compared to the cows of the control group. As the milk fat content of the cows fed with tallow and rapeseed oil was lower than that of the cows of the control group, no significant differences were observed between the groups concering FCM production. In connection with the additional feeding of fats to dairy cows the fatty acid content of milk fat changed. As compared with the cows of the control group, the share of C 16:0 fatty acids decreased and the amount of C 18:1 fatty acids increased in milk fat of the cows fed with tallow as well as in the milk fat of those fed with rapeseed oil
