Negative and positive effects of liming acid soils with oil-shale ash

Influence of liming acid soils with oil-shale ash has different effects on soils. On one hand it eliminates acidity of the soil, but on the other hand, it can pollute the soil with heavy metals and radioactive compounds. To investigate the dualism of the problem, content of U, Pb, Nb, Sr, Th, As, Ga and other elements was determined in the soil samples of limed and control plots at Ahja experimental fields of Estonian Agricultural University. Two different rates of oil-shale ash (18 and 39 t of CaCO3 per ha) have been used liming the experimental fields. As it turned out, the difference between the content of heavy metals and radioactive elements of different variants was not significant at 95. According to the results of the experiment, oil-shale ash can be used to reduce acidity of soils without being afraid of polluting the environment.
