Evaluation of Bean Genotypes and Rhizobia Strains for Nitrogen Fixation Potential on Two Soil Types

Four different experiments were conducted to evaluate the nitrogen fixation potential of bean genotypes and rhizobia strains on two soil types. All bean genotypes produced significant (P less than or equal to 0.05) number of nodules when inoculated with mixed rhizobia strains. Grain yield of these genotypes was higher on Vertisol than on Alfisol. In screening the rhizobia strains, out of the twenty evaluated four and seven strains produced higher yield than the fertilized yield on Vertisol and Alfisol respectively. Evaluation of four released bean varieties intercropped with two sorghum varieties shows that Black Desie produced 73 and 100 percent higher grain yield when intercropped with tall and short sorghum respectively. All varieties responded to inoculation when grown in soil, although the yield increase was very low. Further screening of strains and genotypes under different cropping systems and persistence and competitiveness of strains is recommended.
