Internal Parasites of Local Chicken of Leku, Southern Ethiopia
1992
Tegene Negesse
A survey of endoparasite was conducted in local chickents originating from Leku, Sidamo Administrative Region. Postmortem examination revealed the presence of six species of tapeworms: Hymenolepis corioca, Raillietina cesticillus, R. echion both rida, R. maginumida, R. tetragona and R. Williamsi; two species of flukes: Echinopharyphium recurvatum and Echinostoma revolutum; and eight species of roundworms: Ascaridia galli, Capillaria anatis, C. caudinfilata, Harteria gallinarum, Heterakis bonasae, H. gallinarum, Subulura brumpti and S. suctoria. Among the tapeworms prevalence rates of R. cesticilus (18.42 percent) and R. echinobothrida (33.40 percent) were high E. recurvatum and E. revolutum had 3.34 percent and 1.67 percent respectiely. The lower prevalence rate of flatworms in male chickens probably shows that there was some sex differences in resisting the worms. The prevalence rates of the roundworms ranged from 3 percent for Harteria gallinarum to 40 percent for S. brumpti. A. galli, C. anatis, Heterakis gallinarum and Harteria gallinarum are known for their pathogenicity. Differences in relative abundance of the roundworms were observed between male and female chickens. Dressing percentage was negatively correlated with worm load and prevalence rate because they are pathogenic, reduce appetite, cause obstruction and anaemia. Therefore, farmers are advised to drench chicken periodically with broadspectrum antihelminthics. Proper disposal of feces of chickens and livestock; raising young and old chicks separately; not keeping potential carriers such as old chicks for long should also be encouraged.
